October 2015 version of 'The Guide' & footpath improvement

Post by mac.hawk » 01 Oct 2015, 20:31

Over Whernside & Ingleborough today (1st October 2015) sees......

The flagging off Whernside still waiting to be done.

The snack bar at Philpin is now closed for the winter.

The signage on the small pillar at Swine Tail (near Ingleborough summit plateau) still not in situ (or it's been in situ & removed - as on previous occasions).

There was footpath maintenance being undertaken on the path at the north end of The Allotment (pic below)

and as you approach the derelict Shooting Hut the flagging has been set, uphill of the boardwalk (pic below)

I've added a comment to all versions of 'The Guide' as this section was previously particularly bad underfoot so we're now into an October 2015 version of all versions of 'The Guide'.

Hope to cover the Horton to Ribblehead route over PyG some time next week to give a full update of the route.

See previous entries on how to get a (free) copy of 'The Guide' (basically email a request to me at mac.hawk@ntlworld.com).

Step in the right direction for me - flags aren't everyone's favourite thing but they make progress much easier and if time is against you they make for faster progress as well.

Nowadays I'm generally resigned to accept that the flagging is probably a necessity along the most badly eroded sections, but it's the ensuing stepping that is a result of such that gets me nowadays.

15 years ago when I first completed 'The Challenge' so much was up/down hill and not stepped, the ensuing flagging has made it a somewhat different 'challenge' nowadays and something my older knees find much harder to tolerate.
