Alternative Route around the Bog

Post by Hansbury » 15 Mar 2011, 20:41

Hoping to complete the walk this April. Have read a lot about the boggy area from Pen-y-ghent to RibbleHead. If it is wet is there not an alternative route around this area. i.e Could I not stay on the Pennine Way then cut across to Sell Gill Holes. Any information would be much appreciated.

The national park are suggesting the route over Whitber Hill:

I'm not sure exactly what route you mean via Sell Gill Holes, but check that you are still in a right to roam area before you use it, or you might spend a lot of time trying to get over walls and barbed wire.

Many thanks, this is the route I was suggesting. Over Whitber Hill and Sell Gill Hill. This seems to be a more straight forward route instead of trecking across Horton Moor if it is as boggy as I have read about. It maybe a little longer in miles over Whitber Hill but it maybe shorter in time, which is important when we are trying to complete the route within 12 hours.

Could you tell me if the Shake Holes are dangerous.

Thanks for reassuring me.

I wouldn't go climbing into shake holes. But they are pretty easy to avoid. Just take some common sense with you.

we are going to do 3 peaks this weekend. We are going over Whitber Hill to join the Pennine Way near Sell Gill, so we avoid the bog. Good luck with it maybe we'll see you on the way round
