The rail service is used by many, many walkers to access the 3 Peaks area and even some 3 Peakers (like myself) utilise the service so on the face of it the following looks to be very good news.
The government has just announced that Serco & Abellio have lost the franchise to run Northern Rail to Arriva for the period 1st April 2016 to March 2025. You can view an announcement on the Northern Rail website at http://www.northernrail.org/news/7807.
Part of the franchise includes upgrading or renewing rolling stock (trains to you and me) and improving services - how much of this will reach the Leeds-Settle-Carlisle line we can only guess at but It does include a guarantee that the existing Leeds-Settle-Carlisle service will continue for the length of the next franchise, plus two extra Sunday services in each direction from 2017 and an extra Mon-Sat late afternoon departure from Leeds from 2019.
The extra Sunday services are to be very welcomed as the Sunday service has been pretty rubbish for a number of years.
It would also be very welcome news if the staffing at the stations in Settle & Appleby were kept to at least their current level (there were recent threats to withdraw all staffing at both stations).
