Novice walkers aiming for 3 peaks this spring

Hi All. My daughter wanted to do a walk for charity, and we have settled on the Yorkshire Three Peaks this spring. We haven't set a date yet, and I could use some advice on when would be a good time with the weather etc. My daughter is 13 years old and is walking for Cancer Research. Can anyone suggest a decent map or guide that is clear enough for novices? Thanks. Richard.

Richard has contacted me via the 'Guide' posting and I will be sending him copies of the latest version, however his request does raise a particular point that needs addressing.

Undertaking the challenge with a minor does need some real consideration (yes, I know a 13 year old nowadays is going on 25 - at least in their own mind!).

I wouldn't recommend a pairing of just adult and minor, you have to consider the consequences if either one of you has problem and is unable to continue. You can't rely on the mobile phone as the reception in many places is nil.

Would you leave a minor to get help? Would it be fair on the minor to impose the responsibility to leave the adult to get help?

Ok, if starting from Horton on a busy summer Saturday you'll be in the company of probably hundreds of fellow attemptees who would of course help but surely it's the adults responsibility to ensure that any minor with them is safe in their care.

I think you need at least two adults if taking a minor across the route.

As for 'setting a date' (again this is with reference to taking a minor), I personally wouldn't. I'd keep the options open and wait for a day that has a decent weather forecast or certainly if you do 'set a date' and the forecast is poor be readily prepared to postpone the walk.

Maps etc are covered in the guide.

Thanks mac.hawk. Good advice, and I will perhaps see if there is another adult who would accompany us. Going to set a target of end-May to do the walk, although this will be weather permitting.

Wow, seems like an age since I posted this thread....! After a succession of problems (injury, car trouble, weather) we are going for it this week... Praying for some better luck!! Will post here how we get on.

Have just completed the Y3P today. Ouch! That was the single hardest thing I have had to complete. Will be posting details tomorrow, but now I am off to quietly nurse all of my sore bits (and there are many)...
