Best up to date guide

I'll be doing the 3 peaks for the first time with my 13 yr old son in August. We have never done any walking before, but consider ourselves to be reasonably fit, so we should be able to get round within the 12 hour mark, if we don't take the wrong turn. I have studied the route online and have a rough idea of the route to take. Would a guide be useful and is so, which is the best up to date guide. I understand there is now a new route from Pen-y-Ghent to Whernside which avoids the boggy area. Is there a guide that includes this updated path?
