New franchise owner for Northern Rail

The rail service is used by many, many walkers to access the 3 Peaks area and even some 3 Peakers (like myself) utilise the service so on the face of it the following looks to be very good news. The government has just announced that Serco & Abellio have lost the franchise to run Northern Rail to Ar...

Re: October 2015 version of 'The Guide' & footpath improveme

Nowadays I'm generally resigned to accept that the flagging is probably a necessity along the most badly eroded sections, but it's the ensuing stepping that is a result of such that gets me nowadays. 15 years ago when I first completed 'The Challenge' so much was up/down hill and not stepped, the en...

Re: Horton-Pen y Ghent-Ribblehead hike today

The wall and gate were still in the same state of disrepair on my visit yesterday (14/10/2015). Not sure they'll last a 3 Peaks winter unless they get attention sooner rather than later!

October 2015 version of 'The Guide'

The October 2015 version of 'The Guide' is now available. Re-walked the entire route in the last 13 days. The signage on the small vertical stone at Swine Tail (Ingleborough) is still an issue, despite being repeatedly replaced - it continues to be vandalised/removed (who, what or why? ................

Subtle Change

Hadn't noticed this before today but for some reason it was so obvious on today's walk that I thought it worth a mention. On the anti-clockwise route as you descend PyG and take the sharp left along the Pennine Way (at the waymarker post) I noticed that the route heading towards 'The Bog' has been '...

October 2015 version of 'The Guide' & footpath improvement

Over Whernside & Ingleborough today (1st October 2015) sees...... The flagging off Whernside still waiting to be done. The snack bar at Philpin is now closed for the winter. The signage on the small pillar at Swine Tail (near Ingleborough summit plateau) still not in situ (or it's been in situ & rem...

Replacement signage at Ribblehead

This only really applies to those doing 'The Challenge' anti-clockwise from the rail station at Ribblehead. Once you leave the station access road and turn right to pass the pub and then go over the cattlegrid, at the left turn along the wide track towards the viaduct there used to be a waymarker/fi...

Re: Latest news 24.07.2015

Was up in the area again today and there's been no movement on the flagging on Whernside, the flags are still laying adjacent the path.

More accomodation in Horton

The Golden Lion pub/hotel in Horton seems to have successfully applied to build an extra detached accommodation unit that looks like it's just waiting for the legal system to process before building begins. You'll find details on the second page two of the following link. http://www.yorkshiredales.o...
