Re: Using a compass

The exits are roughly within less than 100 yards of each other and I'd (obviously) agree with Robmed56 (and I do cover this in 'The Guide'). However, advice, whether you want to take it or not, as follows ..... As you summit the Ingleborough plateau and head for the trig point/+windbreak shelter eve...

Re: Current Walking Conditions?

Unfortunately the posting on 28/04/2013 did not indicate the newly surfaced route over Whitber & Sell Gill hills was taken & hence my comments as I (admittedly wrongly) presumed these referred to 'The Bog', the comments still stand as accurate though. The link to the external website is provided for...

Re: Using a compass

A compass is only any good if you know how to use it and be able to relate it to a position (or projected position) on a map. Personally, whilst I have a compass I have never used it in 20 years of hiking, have never felt the need to use it and in my opinion it's far more important to be able to rea...

Re: Current Walking Conditions?

Just like to point out that the 3 Peaks Fell Race held yesterday (27/04/2013) used the newly surfaced route over Whitber/Sell Gill hills and any 'mush' over 'the bog' has not been caused, enhanced or related to the 2013 race: see http://www.threepeaksrace.org.uk and view the race report. View the ti...

Re: Current Walking Conditions?

It's a very good forecast for this Saturday but there does seem to be residual ice/compacted snow in places. If you have them pack cleats (ice grippers) for your footware and take a walking pole too if you have one - if you don't have them just be a bit extra wary and don't mind the clock. The ascen...

Re: Current Walking Conditions?

Hi Phil see the comment regarding the current conditions I've made in the '3 Peaks 31st March' from Sophie Hardcastle. I got 3 pairs of cleats off Amazon for just over ten quid and they work a treat. Not a single wobble today, I've probably walked around 80 miles in them, usually on a 10-12 miles hi...

Re: 3 PEAKS 31st MARCH

Have just returned from a clomp over Ingleborough (30/03/2013) and if you want to make life easier for yourself cleats (ice grippers) are essential tomorrow and on Bank Holiday Monday. Whilst I came from Clapham and ended up at Ribblehead it was very obvious that over approx 500 metres height the co...

Re: 3 PEAKS 31st MARCH

Email me for March edition of 'The Guide'. Includes directions for all the route plus 'jump out points'. It's late in the day but I'd suggest you get everyone to have a pair of cleats (also known as ice grippers) for their footwear. Your main problem will be the compacted snow/ice, particularly on t...

Re: Any tips for 4 Beginners?

The latest edition of 'The Guide' will answer most of your questions but briefly... Ascending all three summits prior to attempting 'The Challenge' is a really good idea, whether you take the '3 Peaks' route up/down them or not it'll give you a good idea of what to expect. You don't need to be mega-...
