Re: Any tips for 4 Beginners?

I think Kelly-Adams has got her 3 Peaks mixed up, this sounds like the hurtle down the motorway doing Ben Nevis, Scafell & Snowdon job to me.

Re: Best route up Pen-Y-Ghent

It's not 'better' either way. The challenge is to summit all three peaks and return to your starting point, how you choose to accomplish this is entirely a matter of personal choice. However the practicalities are that in ascending PyG via the nose........... 1. If you have a problem with heights, t...

Walks to/from Ribblehead

On my travels across the WWW I came across this rather nice web page http://www.aucu61.dsl.pipex.com/ribblehead.htm that details a number of suggestions for walks to/from Ribblehead railway station. The actual route guides are not greatly detailed but if you can read the OS or Harvey's map's well en...

Re: Current Walking Conditions?

Walked the Ribblehead to Horton section today (Sat 25th May) and it's currently about as perfect as you could expect. Still a few muddy bits down Sulber Nick but the adjacent areas are dry and no detours are necessary - was told by a number of 3 Peakers that the route avoiding the bog is currently f...

Re: Bananas!

mjp823 it's beyond me too!!! You've got to make some sort of effort to get up PyG and you'd think people of that pursuasion would be more environmentally aware and would take their rubbish with them! As an aside, I did once see a sheep on PyG summit, some years ago, eat a discarded banana - skin and...

Re: Using a compass

The exits are roughly within less than 100 yards of each other and I'd (obviously) agree with Robmed56 (and I do cover this in 'The Guide'). However, advice, whether you want to take it or not, as follows ..... As you summit the Ingleborough plateau and head for the trig point/+windbreak shelter eve...

Re: Current Walking Conditions?

Unfortunately the posting on 28/04/2013 did not indicate the newly surfaced route over Whitber & Sell Gill hills was taken & hence my comments as I (admittedly wrongly) presumed these referred to 'The Bog', the comments still stand as accurate though. The link to the external website is provided for...

Re: Using a compass

A compass is only any good if you know how to use it and be able to relate it to a position (or projected position) on a map. Personally, whilst I have a compass I have never used it in 20 years of hiking, have never felt the need to use it and in my opinion it's far more important to be able to rea...

Re: Current Walking Conditions?

Just like to point out that the 3 Peaks Fell Race held yesterday (27/04/2013) used the newly surfaced route over Whitber/Sell Gill hills and any 'mush' over 'the bog' has not been caused, enhanced or related to the 2013 race: see http://www.threepeaksrace.org.uk and view the race report. View the ti...
